Meet Team Dynamic: Joe Cowen - CrossFit

We asked 25 year old Joe Cowen, brand ambassador and CrossFit coach, about his training routine, diet, and advice for any would-be CrossFitters out there!

Hi Joe! So what got you into CrossFit?

I started out as just your average gym goer – all bench and no squats! I heard about CrossFit on the TV and was intrigued… I mean, how hard could it be? I decided to give it a go and WOW – I didn’t even do the correct weights and it crushed me! From that point on, I was hooked. I was determined to get better!

What’s your best accomplishment so far in CrossFit?

Coming 4th at the Tribal Clash 2014 in a team, and then winning WildWest 2017 in a team with 2 other lads.

What keeps you motivated?

Staying motivated is easy when you’re a coach, watching people give 110% daily! With competing mostly in team competitions, it keeps me working hard so I don't let my team down and become the weak link!

How to you set your goals?

My overall goal is to be better every day. That can be anything from hitting bigger lifts or beating my mates at a workout!

What inspires you?

The people I coach are my daily inspiration. They give their all every single day.

What is your diet like?

I don’t really have a planned diet, I just know what I should and shouldn’t be eating and have everything in proportion.

Do you take any additional supplements to help with your training?

Creatine and Protein are my basic go-to supplements, helping me recover faster and get stronger. If I have a longer session planned, I’ll take an amino acid drink. My favourite supplement is Pre-Workout, especially for a heavy Olympic lifting session – it helps me focus and gives me an energy boost.

What’s your current training regime?

I try to follow the “3 on, 1 off” regime as much as possible, with my day off being some active recovery or some light technique work. My training revolves around whatever it is we’re focusing on in the class that week, but I usually do an Olympic lift twice a week as a minimum.

What’s the hardest thing about CrossFit?

There is always something to work on! Someone always beats you… unless you’re Rich Froning, in which case not many people beat you!

What do you think is the best thing about CrossFit?

Pushing my body to the absolute max alongside my friends! I love learning new movements and skills, from freestanding handstand push-ups to a new barbell complex.

What’s the best advice you were ever given?

Be the best you.

Do you have a motto?

Always have fun. I’m not a professional and I have a very long way to go if I want to be, so what's the point if it's not fun?

What advice do you have for anyone who wants to start CrossFit?

Enjoy it and trust the process. CrossFit isn’t a circuit class or something you can just dip into every now and again, it's a strength & conditioning program that needs time and dedication for success. If you want a healthier, fitter lifestyle, then CrossFit is the way! Do some research, find your local box, and get in touch. Oh, and remember to take pre-workout… just kidding, but it really is amazing!
